The key to buying furniture online is knowing where to shop, so we've compiled a list of the best furniture stores out there. These trusted retailers offer quality decor at a wide range of price points, so whether you're decorating a bedroom on a budget or looking to splurge on an heirloom-quality sofa, these are the best places to shop for furniture online today.

Best for contemporary furniture: Crate & Barrel

Best for farmhouse furniture: Pottery Barn

Target

Target carries a wide range of trendy furniture pieces that are available at budget-friendly prices. Target

Shop furniture at Target

Target is the one-stop shop for everything you need from groceries to household items, and we're also particularly fond of its affordable and trendy furniture. Target is also home to long-standing furniture and home decor collaborations with popular design groups like Jungalow, Studio McGee, and Magnolia, so you can find stylish picks at reasonable prices.

Target shines with its home accents including coffee tables, media consoles, accent chairs, dining tables, desks, and more, and shipping is free on orders over $35. Most of its items ship within a week, but the flip side of the coin is that assembly is required on many items. However, arguably the best part of shopping at this retailer is that Target-owned brands, such as Threshold and Opalhouse, have a generous 365-day return period. Beyond Target-owned brands, you can find options from Costway, Ameriwood Home and more.

Target's furniture offerings also include a Made-to-Order collection of accent chairs, dining chairs, and bed frames with customizable fabric options at extremely competitive prices. They also make it easy to browse according to small space needs. While they don't offer traditional design services, they do have a handy "Home Planner" tool that lets you design virtual spaces and try out different furniture and decor.

Wayfair

A stylish living room with a teal couch, white fluffy chair, checkered rug, and plants.
Wayfair has a huge selection of furniture and home decor from many different brands. Wayfair

Shop furniture at Wayfair

Wayfair offers a vast assortment of affordable furniture, and you'll get your new pieces ASAP — the brand offers free one-day shipping on many of its products. You can find all types of furniture and decor on the site, including a huge range of styles and colors, and the brand runs frequent promotions and sales, lowering prices even further. It can be a bit overwhelming to browse Wayfair's vast selection, so be sure to take advantage of their product filters — you can narrow down your options by price, size, style, color, customer rating, and much more. Wayfair also has its own in-house design services that connect you to a designer with a $99 deposit that can eventually go toward your purchase.

It's important to note that Wayfair doesn't manufacture all its furniture itself. While there are a few in-house brands like Wayfair Basics, Wayfair Custom Upholstery, Birch Lane, and AllModern, it also sells furniture from tons of different suppliers, similar to Amazon. Although Wayfair vets its suppliers, the quality of furniture can vary, so it's important to do your research and read reviews on items you're considering. To help you find good-quality pieces, the brand also recently launched its new "Wayfair Verified" badge, which indicates a product that the brand has evaluated firsthand for quality and ease of assembly. Finally, keep in mind that most furniture from Wayfair ships in standard packaging and requires assembly upon arrival, so you will have to bring it inside and put it together yourself.

Grandin Road

A dining room with green walls, a walnut table, and white chairs.
If you like traditional furniture styles, Grandin Road offers timeless decor at reasonable prices. Grandin Road

Shop furniture at Grandin Road

Grandin Road is perhaps best known for its imaginative selection of seasonal and holiday home decor, but the company also sells indoor and outdoor furniture at reasonable prices. It's not quite as affordable as, say, Wayfair, but the quality is higher — many of the pieces have solid wood frames and performance upholstery, so you'll be able to use them for many years.

This online retailer is a particularly good place to shop if you prefer more classic furniture with timeless shapes and styles. Grandin Road carries dining sets, living room furniture, beds, and more, and most of its designs are classic enough that they'll never go out of style. Just keep in mind that shipping is a bit pricey — it starts at $149 for orders under $1,000 and increases based on your total purchase price.

World Market

A dining room with wooden chairs and a burnt orange couch.
As its name suggests, World Market carries unique global styles that will make your decor pop. World Market

Shop furniture at World Market

If you like more unique pieces, World Market has a huge variety of trendy furniture, as well as global-inspired home decor. Many of its pieces are quite budget-friendly, and you'll find a wide range of decor styles, from traditional to mid-century and even eclectic. While World Market has furniture in virtually every category, we particularly like its selection of accent and task chairs. The chairs come in all sorts of styles, colors, and materials, and they're an inexpensive way to spruce up any room of your home.

This retailer has physical stores around the country where you can browse select items in person and even pick up items in store to save on shipping. Just keep in mind that when you shop online, shipping costs vary based on the size of the item—on each product page, the brand lists an "Oversized Item Shipping Charge," which can range from $50 to a few hundred.

CB2

A large dining room with a modern design, including a gold chandelier and a white mirror.
CB2 is a go-to destination for stylish modern and contemporary furnishings. CB2

Shop furniture at CB2

If your decor style is edgy and cool, there's no better place to shop for modern furniture online than CB2. The retailer is a go-to destination for modern and contemporary styles, which feature sleek lines, eye-catching materials, and unique silhouettes — look at the best-selling Providence Dining Table if you want to see what we mean. CB2 sells everything from dining sets to lighting and rugs, and it also places an emphasis on sustainability and responsible design, using sustainably sourced materials, recycled packaging, and ethical manufacturers. The brand frequently highlights its partnerships with independent designers like Kara Mann and Matthew Williamson and collaborations with Goop to The White Lotus.

Due to its high-end nature, CB2 furniture is notably more expensive than many other online brands, but it also has a lot of unique pieces that you won't find anywhere else. Most furniture comes with white glove delivery, but shipping costs will vary depending on how close (or far) you live to one of the brand's warehouses.

One Kings Lane

A cushy green couch in front of a wall of windows and curtains.
If price isn't a concern, One Kings Lane has stunning made-to-order furniture, as well as beautiful vintage pieces. One Kings Lane

Shop furniture at One Kings Lane

One Kings Lane is an excellent choice for luxury furniture — most of its pieces cost over $1,000 due to designer labels, such as custom upholstery company Miles Talbott and solid wood furniture from Ethnicraft. The retailer has plenty of pieces under its own product lines, as well, including many made-to-order styles with custom upholstery that are crafted from premium materials like solid hardwood. Although at the top tier of our pricing guide, One Kings Lane has beautiful, eye-catching furniture in a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. Looking for vintage and eclectic furniture? One Kings Lane has a solid selection of one-of-a-kind furniture and designs, as well from Queen Anne style chairs to 1920s-era Turkish rugs.

This high-end furniture store predominantly sells online, but it also has an appointment-only showroom in New York. Many of its products are made-to-order, so they may have a longer lead time than other brands. Be sure to check out shipping and return costs before you buy, as they're on the higher side.

Crate & Barrel

A living room with a green couch, modular coffee table, and misty painting.
Crate & Barrel has mostly contemporary designs, and many of its pieces can be customized to suit your style. Crate & Barrel

Shop at Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel is a well-known furniture brand with showrooms around the country, and it offers a huge selection of furniture and decor. Crate & Barrel has a more timeless aesthetic with sophisticated contemporary designs — if you prefer more neutral color palettes and solid patterns, you'll likely prefer Crate & Barrel over its sister-company CB2. The retailer also has an impressive selection of custom furniture — you can choose from a library of materials, colors, and fabrics, making it a great option if you're looking for something specific.

Of course, quality furniture comes with a high price tag, and Crate & Barrel is no exception. While you can usually find home decor and kitchenware for under $100, you'll be hard-pressed to find any furniture (especially custom pieces) under $1,000. While the brand offers flat-rate shipping and white glove delivery for your order, the downside is that the cost can be up to $399 if you live further away from a warehouse.

Pottery Barn

A bright living room with a gray couch and blue-and-gold throw pillows.
Pottery Barn has a polished farmhouse aesthetic, with lots of warm wood tones and rustic accents. Pottery Barn

Shop furniture at Pottery Barn

If you go to any upscale shopping plaza, chances are that you'll find a Pottery Barn, a brand that's easy to recognize by its stylish yet welcoming farmhouse-style decor — like the iconic York sofa collection. While in-person stores often have a curated selection of furniture and lots of seasonal decorations, you can shop hundreds of additional furniture styles online, including collaborations with other brands like Monique Lhuillier and Kravet. While Pottery Barn is still on the more expensive end of the price spectrum, it does offer some pieces for under $1,000, especially during sale events.

In particular, Pottery Barn is a great place to shop for seating, including couches, chairs, and loveseats. Virtually all its seating can be customized with hundreds of upholstery fabrics, and the brand will send you free swatches to see in person before you commit to a certain color. Pottery Barn also has special decor lines for babies, kids, and teens, all of which deliver the same charming aesthetic.

Serena & Lily

A white living room with a couch, chairs, and plush coffee table.
If you're searching for elegant coastal-inspired decor, Serena & Lily is the place to go. Serena & Lily

Shop furniture at Serena and Lily

If you want your home to feel like a charming, airy beach house, Serena & Lily is the furniture store for you. This brand is synonymous with luxury coastal style — you'll see lots of white and blue color palettes, rattan furniture, and quaint striped fabrics. You'll find both indoor and outdoor furniture, including its iconic Riviera chair collection, as well as decor pieces like rugs, bedding, lights, and more. Plus, if you're not sure what you're looking for, Serena & Lily has complimentary design services to help guide you through the process of decorating your home.

The biggest downside of Serena & Lily is its price point, which is on par with other luxury furniture brands. Most of its large pieces, including couches, are priced between $2,000 and $10,000. Delivery options for large items start at $149 and include doorstep, room of choice, and white-glove delivery, with pricing varying based on your distance from a shipping hub.

Ballard Designs

You can add some European flair to your home with furniture from Ballard Designs. Ballard Designs

Shop furniture at Ballard Designs

Ballard Designs will transport you to the French countryside. The European-inspired furniture company has eclectic and unique collections, and many of its pieces are made from premium materials like solid wood, so they'll last for many years.

This kind of furniture comes with a high price tag, but Ballard Designs offers a variety of services to make it worth your money and time. With complimentary design services, you can work with an interior designer to get the style you want for any room in your home. Ballard Designs also has a generous 90-day return policy, but its shipping may take longer than other brands.

Article

Article offers trendy mid-century modern furniture with fast shipping and reasonable prices. Article

Shop furniture at Article

If you want the mid-century aesthetic at a reasonable price point, Article offers trendy furniture that won't break the bank. You can shop both indoor and outdoor furniture, as well as select decor, and most of the brand's pieces have a sleek silhouette. Bestsellers include the Ceni Sofa and the Sven Sofa. One caveat is that Article doesn't offer as many color options as other brands. Instead, most pieces are available in four or five options only, but this also means faster delivery times. The Canadian brand also doesn't have any showroom availability, which helps keep their costs down while providing high quality furniture.

A lot of Article's furniture is also available via flat-rate doorstep delivery. You can opt for in-home delivery for $199, but keep in mind that the brand's delivery partners don't dispose of boxes and packaging.

Anthropologie

A soft pink couch, with a floral Ottoman and wooden coffee table.
You can find beautiful statement pieces at Anthropologie, which offers many exclusive furniture designs. Anthropologie

Shop furniture at Anthropologie

Anthropologie might be known for its clothing and accessories, but the brand continues to expand its collections of furniture and home decor that are just as well-made. In particular, Anthropologie furniture is eclectic and eye-catching, making it a great place to shop for statement pieces. A few of its signature products include the Fern Storage Cabinet and beloved Primrose Mirror, but you can find all types of furniture through this retailer, ranging from sofas to bed frames and rugs.

Anthropologie furniture falls in the mid- to high range in terms of price point, and you'll want to pay attention to shipping dates as you shop, as backorders are common. However, if you're looking for unique decor that will make your space pop, this retailer is a great place to shop.

Chairish

A coastal-inspired, open-concept living room.
Chairish sells second-hand vintage furniture that's been carefully curated by design experts. Chairish

Shop furniture at Chairish

Chairish is the destination for shopping thousands of unique, beautiful vintage pieces. It's akin to a huge online antique store. Find everything, from furniture to art to lighting and decor, and the pieces are all curated by well-regarded vintage sellers from across the country. The prices can vary widely, ranging from as low as $50 to over $10,000, but you do have the option to "make an offer" on many products if you're working within a specific budget.

Because Chairish is essentially an antique marketplace — not a traditional furniture brand — its policies are a bit different. You only have 48 hours to initiate a return after it's been delivered, and shipping costs and delivery times will vary by seller and item. Pay attention to photos and notes regarding flaws as each piece is unique.

ABC Carpet and Home

A pastel living room, with a pink couch and sheer lavender curtains.
ABC Carpet and Home has contemporary furniture styles that are sure to stand out in your home. ABC Carpet and Home

Shop furniture at ABC Carpet and Home

ABC Carpet and Home is a NYC-based brand that sells cool contemporary and retro-inspired pieces, and they carry smaller indie brands that you won't find at other retailers. The brand also carries several of its own in-house brands, such as Cobble Hill, which lets you design your own furniture with thousands of frame and fabric combinations.

When you shop its online store, you can find furniture and decor in a rainbow of colors, and there's lots of eye-catching upholstery to be found, including soft velvet and bouclé finishes. As its name suggests, the brand also boasts a large collection of area rugs in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors, such as its own Alchemy Rug Collection that features hand-knotted rugs from India made from upcycled fibers.

A lot of the furniture from ABC Carpet and Home is made-to-order, so be prepared for longer lead times. Alternatively, you may want to shop its in-stock furniture collection for faster delivery. This brand also has a very short return window — you only have five days to initiate a return, and you'll be on the hook for return shipping costs.

West Elm

A neutral living room with a greenish-gray couch and a rectangular coffee table.
West Elm is a popular destination for mid-century furniture, and many of its products are made-to-order. West Elm

Shop furniture at West Elm

West Elm sells beautiful mid-century furniture that's well-made and will last for years. You'll find everything from sleek consoles to cozy sofas, and the brand's upholstered pieces are often available in hundreds of different fabrics, so you can choose a material that perfectly matches your space. West Elm also offers free design services.

West Elm is a sister brand to Pottery Barn, so the two furniture retailers have similar policies. Shipping costs will vary depending on your distance from the warehouse, and you have 30 days to initiate returns. However made-to-order furniture is considered final sale and furniture is delivered via white glove delivery. West Elm also has many physical stores where you can see popular furniture pieces like the Harmony Sofa in person, but some items are online-only.

How we chose

We considered a variety of factors while selecting furniture stores for this guide. We looked at each retailer's selection, considering factors such as styles available, showroom availability, materials, customization options, and overall price range. We also dug into every store's shipping and return policies, looking for any hidden fees that could impact your buying experience.

While curating this list, we also relied heavily on our own personal experiences shopping with these brands. Our team has tested furniture from many of the retailers on this list, and we can attest to the quality of the products, as well as the ease of ordering and delivery.

Furniture store FAQs

When is the best time to shop for furniture?

Retailers frequently offer storewide discounts around holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day and of course, Black Friday. Retailers looking to clear out inventory will also drop prices before launching new collections. You can also save by shopping off-season, like scooping up outdoor patio furniture in the fall, while indoor furniture is most deeply discounted in the winter and summer months. If you have your eye on a more expensive piece, it's worth waiting until one of these holidays to save a bit of money on your purchase. Typical furniture discounts fall anywhere from 20 to 40% off.

Which furniture pieces are worth the splurge?

It's often worth spending more on furniture that will be used heavily in your home. For instance, if you're shopping for a sofa that will be used daily by your family, it's worth splurging on a model with a solid hardwood frame, stain-resistant upholstery, sinuous spring seats, and dense foam cushions. These features will help ensure the sofa can stand up to daily use and will last for several years — cheaper models will often start to sag quickly and generally need to be replaced much sooner.

On the flip side, if it's going to be a decorative piece in your home like aside tables, decorative chairs, and even bookcases that won't be used directly, I think it's acceptable to opt for less expensive pieces. This could come at the expense of less durable materials like MDF and particleboard Just be sure to check their weight capacity and whether they have exposed hardware that you'll need to hide while styling the piece in your home.

Is it better to buy furniture online or in-store?

There are benefits to buying furniture online and in person. When you shop online, you'll have a much larger variety to browse through, as most retailers only have a small selection of their furniture on display in showrooms. Many salespeople are also trained to be design experts and make recommendations about what pairs well with each other. Although, this leaves room for upselling and pushy behavior if they work on commission.

On the other hand, you'll be able to see furniture in person and try it out when you shop in-store. This is particularly beneficial for pieces like sofas or mattresses, where comfort is paramountYou'll also be able to assess the quality and scale of the furniture more carefully, and if you're shopping locally, your furniture may be delivered much sooner (if the retailer has it in stock). It's also a fairly typical practice to browse in store for inspiration and research and make final purchasing decisions from the comfort of your own home, and vice versa.
