Apple Pay does work on an iPad — here's how to set up and use it for in-app purchases and quick online checkouts

While Apple Pay may be most helpful for iPhone users on the go, the feature is also fully functional on iPads as well.

Apple Pay does work on your iPad

The first way to use Apple Pay on your iPad is by setting it up with Touch ID, which will allow you to use it for in-app purchases and online with participating stores. 

And while it's likely unlikely that you'll use your iPad for in-store purchasing, Apple Pay is still useful for its other benefits: accessing your transaction history, purchasing transit tickets, and browsing in the App Store.

It's also worth noting that if you've synced Apple Pay through your iCloud account, the same cards you add to your iPad will also appear on your other devices.

Here's how to set up and use Apple Pay on your iPad.

How to set up Apple Pay on your iPad

1. Open Settings.

2. Scroll down to "Wallet & Apple Pay" in the fourth set of options.

3. Tap the blue "Add Card" option.

4. If you haven't set up Touch ID yet, you may be prompted to at this time. Your Settings will redirect you to the Touch ID & Passcode section, where you should switch on the "Apple Pay" toggle. Tap or swipe to switch the toggle from gray to green.

5. Settings will then take you through the steps to set up your Touch ID to use with Apple Pay. Follow the directions by placing your finger on the home button and setting a passcode.

6. Once this is complete, jump back to the "Wallet & Apple Pay" section where you can now add a card under "Payment Cards."

7. A pop-up will open. Tap "Continue."

8. Select your card type and position your card in the frame or opt to enter your information manually. Read and agree to the terms and conditions, and complete the set-up instructions. 

9. Once completed, you should receive a notification stating your newly added card is ready for Apple Pay. You can add up to eight cards to your wallet. If you tap on a card, you view both its banking information and a list of your latest Apple Pay transactions.

You can also set your transaction defaults from this page. This includes selecting your default card and updating your shipping address and contact information to be used for in-app and online purchases.

How to use Apple Pay on your iPad 

1. Like on your iPhone or Mac, Apple Pay can be used for both in-app purchases and online orders. For the latter, look for the Apple logo followed by "Pay" — typically found in black near the checkout options.

2. Tapping the Apple Pay option will open a pop-up allowing you to select your card. Your shipping address and contact information will automatically populate, which also allows you to skip all of the steps in an online checkout. Use Touch ID to complete the purchase.

3. Just as you would on your iPhone, you can also access Apple Pay for in-app purchases. When you are ready to checkout on a participating app, you should also find the Apple Pay option. This option is found on many popular apps, including food ordering services, transit systems, and more.
