The underground railway network will make getting around the city much faster and easier by reducing crowds on existing rail services, like the London Underground and National Rail.
Crossrail estimates the first services will begin in mid-2018, with the rest being opened in phases until December 2019.
So far, over 10 kilometres (6 miles) of new track has been installed according to a project overview, and at some stations, work is close to being finished.

Work on Crossrail began in May 2009.

Construction teams began to dig 26 miles of new tunnels underneath the streets of London.

Here's one of the giant machines used to dig the tunnels. It's called a tunnel boring machine.

The boring machines created a network of huge, empty tunnels.
Now, work is well underway in the tunnels on the installation of track, ventilation, high voltage power, signalling and other key features of the Crossrail network.
Five different types of track are being used in the network, according to Crossrail. Some of track is designed to absorb vibrations to reduce the noise heard by people above ground. These special tracks are being installed beneath the central Soho and the Barbican stations in central London.
Four multi-purpose gantries are being used to transport and position over 57 km of rail in Crossrail's central section, according to Crossrail's latest project overview.
Seventeen escalators, six lifts, flooring, wall cladding, and space for station services are all in place in the station's ticket hall, Crossrail says.
Work is at an advanced stage above the ground, too. The station is located in one of London's major financial districts where the headquarters of companies like Barclays, J.P. Morgan, and HSBC are based.
Bond Street will be part of the central section along with Canary Wharf, Paddington, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, and Whitechapel. This is where commuters will buy tickets once completed.
