JetBlue just launched a fancy new credit card, but it's rarely ever worth it

Updated

JetBlue just launched a premium credit card that comes with airport lounge access, an up to $300 annual travel credit, and the biggest welcome offer currently available for a new JetBlue card.

But our experts are dragging our feet on this one because the JetBlue Premier Card only makes sense for a super-specific demographic.

Who Should Get the JetBlue Premier Card?

This new credit card will be a great addition to your wallet if:

  • You almost exclusively fly with JetBlue and its airline partners
  • You don't already have Priority Pass™ membership, and frequently travel through airports with Priority Pass restaurants
  • You frequently use JetBlue's travel portal to book hotels and rental cars
  • You want Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® membership but don't already have a credit card that offers free registration
  • You want to use JetBlue points to pay off your credit card statement at a 1 cent per point value

Here's what you should know about the industry's newest airline credit card with premium travel benefits to decide if it's right for you.

JetBlue Premier Card Rewards

New cardholders can earn a welcome bonus of 70,000 bonus points and 5 tiles after spending $5,000 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full within the first 90 days of account opening.

That will get you 10% closer to Mosaic status. Still, we'd expect more generosity from a card with such a high annual fee — especially since you have to spend significantly more money to earn the JetBlue Premier Card bonus than you would for the JetBlue Plus Card.

The JetBlue Premier Card earns rewards at the following rates:

  • 6 TrueBlue points per dollar on JetBlue and Paisly purchases
  • 2 points per dollar at restaurants and eligible grocery stores
  • 1 point per dollar for all other eligible purchases

Paisly is JetBlue's travel portal for booking rental cars, hotel stays, and other travel beyond flights.

The card's earning rates are exactly the same as that of the middle-of-the-line JetBlue Plus Card , which only costs $99 a year.

JetBlue Premier Card Benefits

This card has several benefits you won't see on any other JetBlue card, but they're not worth the additional expense for most people.

Priority Pass Select Membership (with Restaurant Access)

The JetBlue Premier Card's primary selling point is Priority Pass membership, which allows travelers to over 1,500 airport lounges visit worldwide.

The over 1,500 airport lounges membership offered on this card is unique because it still includes access to participating airport restaurants — a coveted benefit for U.S. travelers that has been stripped from most other premium credit cards in recent years.

The U.S. doesn't have many Priority Pass airport lounges compared to Europe and Asia, so some airport restaurants comp food and drinks for Priority Pass members up to a certain dollar amount (around $28 per person, depending on the location).

It remains to be seen how long the JetBlue Premier Card will retain this benefit. But if Priority Pass restaurant credit is important to you, this is one of the only credit cards currently accepting new applicants that still offers this perk.

Up to $300 in Paisly Statement Credits A Year

Many premium cards offer several hundred dollars' worth of statement credits to offset the annual fee, with varying degrees of ease or difficulty for redemption.

However, the JetBlue Premier Card includes one of the stingiest versions of this benefit we've ever seen.

Cardholders receive up to $300 back when purchasing travel through JetBlue's travel portal, Paisly. But this annual credit is doled out in $50 increments per purchase of $250 or more through the Paisly account when you pay with this card, on up to six credits a year until you reach the $300 threshold. Thus, you'll have to spend at least $1,500 across six purchases to earn your full credit.

Booking travel through a third-party travel portal is rarely the best idea to begin with, since issues are far harder to resolve if you need to change or cancel your reservation. The extra work required to redeem this card benefit make it highly inconvenient for most travelers.

Up to $120 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® Every Four Years

The JetBlue Premier Card also offers a popular credit: up to $120 toward the application fee for expedited airport security screening, valid once every four years.

Global Entry and TSA PreCheck® are government programs that help you get through the airport more quickly.

Global Entry allows you to zip through a fast lane with digital technology when returning to the U.S. from international travel, while TSA PreCheck® allows you to keep your laptop in your bag, and your shoes and a light jacket on while you pass through airport security.

We recommend applying for Global Entry, since approval includes complimentary admission to TSA PreCheck® as well. Memberships are valid for five years, so this credit renews just in time for you to renew your applications.

While this is a nice perk to have, a statement credit effectively worth a maximum of $30 a year simply isn't enough of a benefit to justify the JetBlue Premier Card's high annual fee.

Many of the best credit cards for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck charge much lower annual fees, while premium cards with similar annual fees typically include credit for other services like CLEAR® Plus.

Group A Priority Boarding

JetBlue Premier Cardholders automatically get Group A priority boarding privileges on flights booked with this card.

The JetBlue Business Card also offers this benefit.

Free Checked Bag

When you pay for your flight with the JetBlue Premier Card, you and up to three companions traveling on your reservation can check your first bag for free.

This benefit is especially valuable because bags cost $10 more at check-in if you don't pre-pay for checked luggage.

Checked bags cost at least $35 apiece on JetBlue for most travelers, meaning you'll save a minimum of $70 per person for a round-trip flight — a potential savings of at least $280 per trip if you max out this benefit.

You'd get the same benefit from the JetBlue Plus Card and the JetBlue Business Card.

5,000 Annual Points Bonus

Cardholders receive 5,000 bonus points each year on their card anniversary. This is the same bonus amount you'd get with the JetBlue Plus Card each year — not enough value to offset the higher annual fee.

10% Points Rebate

You'll earn 10% of your points back when you redeem them for award flights. The JetBlue Plus Card and the JetBlue Business Card both offer this benefit as well.

Points Payback

The JetBlue Premier Card is the only JetBlue card that allows cardholders to redeem points as a statement credit at a value of 1 cent per point.

There are some restrictions on redemption:

  • You must redeem a minimum of $25 worth of points
  • Payback can only be used on eligible transactions within the last 90 days
  • They cannot be applied toward the minimum payment

The JetBlue Plus Card offers a version of Points Payback that only values them at 0.75 cents per point.

The Premier card's redemption rate is arguably better than that of the Plus card, but neither offers good value for your hard-earned rewards.

50% Savings on Inflight Food and Drink

When you use the JetBlue Premier Card to pay for inflight food, cocktails, beer, or wine, you'll receive a 50% savings as a statement credit. This benefit doesn't apply to other inflight purchases such as amenities or seat upgrades.

JetBlue offers cardholders one of the highest discounts for inflight savings. However, the JetBlue Plus Card and the JetBlue Business Card both offer the same generous rate.

JetBlue Premier Card Fees

The JetBlue Premier Card has a $499 annual fee.

It doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, which is a great trait for a card you plan to use internationally. As with most other credit cards, you'll incur fees for late or returned payments, cash advances, and balance transfers.

Consider Amex or Chase for better perks and JetBlue points

The JetBlue Premier Card has an annual fee of $499.

While this fee isn't as high as that of The Platinum Card® from American Express or the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, the JetBlue Premier Card also offers far fewer benefits than either of these cards with airport lounge access.

Both the Amex Platinum Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve earn points you can transfer to JetBlue. So you can have your cake and eat it too — even on JetBlue — with either of these cards.

JetBlue Plus Credit Card

The JetBlue Plus Card is the airline's mid-tier credit card, and offers the best value for most JetBlue flyers. If you're set on getting a JetBlue card, this is the one we'd recommend.

Insider’s Take

The JetBlue Plus Card is a good companion for JetBlue travelers because of its passive benefits like a 10% rebate on redeemed points, a 5,000-point bonus each cardmember year, and free checked bags. However, you'll rarely want to use the card for everyday spending.

Cardholders get a 10% rebate on redeemed points, an annual bonus of 5,000 points on your card anniversary, and one free checked bag apiece for themselves and up to three companions booked together.

Like many airline credit cards, the $99-annual-fee JetBlue Plus Card is mostly useful for its airline travel benefits; it isn't the best option for everyday spending.

JetBlue Plus Card Rewards

New cardholders can earn a welcome bonus of 70,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full within the first 90 days from account opening.

The JetBlue Plus Card earns rewards at the following rates:

  • 6 TrueBlue points per dollar when spending with JetBlue and Paisly
  • 2 points per dollar for restaurant and grocery store purchases
  • 1 point per dollar for all other eligible purchases

JetBlue Plus Card Benefits

The card includes several noteworthy benefits, including:

0% Intro APR Offer

The Barclays JetBlue Plus Card offers 0% intro APR for 12 months on balance transfers made within 45 days of account opening, followed by a standard APR of 20.49% - 29.99% variable.

Free Checked Bag

You and up to three companions traveling on your reservation can check your first bag for free when you pay for your flight with the Barclays JetBlue Plus Card.

5,000 Annual Points Bonus

Cardholders receive 5,000 bonus points each year on their card anniversary. This bonus is worth $67.50 in JetBlue travel by Business Insider's valuations, and can effectively knock down the cost of your card's $99 annual fee to around $32 a year.

JetBlue points never expire. If you don't use them, they'll roll over year after year.

10% Points Rebate

You'll earn 10% of your points back when you redeem them for award flights.

$100 Annual Statement Credit for JetBlue Vacations

JetBlue Plus Cardholders get a $100 statement credit each calendar year when they use this card to pay for a JetBlue Vacations purchase worth $100 or more.

50% Savings on Inflight Food and Drinks

When you use your Barclays JetBlue Plus Card to pay for inflight food, cocktails, beer, or wine, you'll receive a 50% savings in the form of an account statement credit.

This credit doesn't apply to other purchases such as pillows, headphones, and seat upgrades.

JetBlue Plus Card Fees

This card comes with a $99 annual fee — fairly standard for an airline credit card.

This card does not charge foreign transaction fees, so it's good to use overseas.

As with most other credit cards, there are fees for cash advances, balance transfers, late payments, and returned payments.

JetBlue Credit Card

The entry-level JetBlue Card is a simple airline credit card that earns JetBlue points without charging an annual fee.

But we don't recommend it because you can earn much better returns from other credit cards.

Insider’s Take

The entry-level JetBlue Card doesn't come with much of a welcome bonus offer or travel perks, but if you're looking for a simple no-annual-fee card that earns JetBlue points, it could be worth considering.

JetBlue Card Rewards

The JetBlue Card offers a welcome bonus of 10,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. This isn't much, but it's better than nothing — especially on a no-annual-fee card.

The card earns:

  • 3 points per dollar on JetBlue spending
  • 2 points at restaurants and eligible grocery stores
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

JetBlue Card Benefits

The JetBlue Card doesn't have an annual fee and offers a 50% discount on inflight meals and beverages. The discount excludes other inflight purchases like pillows, earphones, or seat upgrades.

The card offers two other benefits:

  • A balance transfer opportunity for new cardholders (0% intro APR for the first twelve billing cycles following each balance transfer that posts to your account within 45 days of account opening, then an APR of 20.49% - 29.99% (based on your creditworthiness)
  • No foreign transaction fees

However, we recommend choosing different cards for both benefits. The best balance transfer credit cards often offer longer zero-interest terms and even earn rewards, while the best credit cards with no foreign transaction fees also come with much more generous perks.

JetBlue Business Credit Card

Finally, JetBlue's only small-business credit card is nearly identical to its consumer card counterpart, the JetBlue Plus Card.

JetBlue Business Card Rewards

New cardholders of the JetBlue Business Card can earn a welcome bonus of 50,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full within the first 90 days.

The JetBlue Business Card earns:

  • 6 TrueBlue points per dollar on eligible JetBlue and Paisly purchases
  • 2 points per dollar for restaurant and office supply purchases
  • 1 point per dollar for all other eligible purchases

This is nearly identical to the JetBlue Plus Card, except you'll earn 2 points per dollar on office supplies instead of grocery stores.

JetBlue Business Card Benefits

The business card offers several benefits we've seen before, and a few exclusive to small business owners:

Free Checked Bag

You and up to three companions traveling on your reservation can check your first bag for free when you pay for your flight with the JetBlue Business Card.

Priority Boarding

Just like the JetBlue Premier Card, the JetBlue Business Cardholders get Group A boarding on flights booked with this card.

5,000 Annual Points Bonus

Cardholders receive 5,000 bonus points each year on their card anniversary.

10% Points Rebate

You'll earn 10% of your points back when you redeem them for award flights.

$100 Annual Statement Credit for JetBlue Vacations

Cardholders get a $100 statement credit each calendar year when they use this card to pay for a JetBlue Vacations purchase worth $100 or more.

50% Savings on Inflight Food and Drinks

When you use your JetBlue Business Card to pay for inflight food, cocktails, beer, or wine, you'll receive a 50% savings as a credit back to your account.

Other Ways to Get JetBlue Points

Flying with JetBlue and getting JetBlue credit cards aren't the only ways to top up your stash of JetBlue points.

Transfer Points From Amex, Capital One, Chase, or Citi

JetBlue is an airline partner of not one, not two, but three major credit card programs: Amex, Chase, and Citi.

This means you can transfer the following credit card point "currencies" to JetBlue:

You can earn points for JetBlue — and many other hotels and airlines — more quickly by using one of the following cards instead of a JetBlue card:

JetBlue Credit Cardholder Insights

In addition to compiling our experts' research on these cards, we checked online forums such as Reddit and Facebook to see what everyday cardholders have to say about the JetBlue credit cards.

JetBlue Plus: Definitely Worth It If You Fly JetBlue

Cardholders consistently speak well of the JetBlue Plus Card for people who fly with the airline at least twice a year and check bags when doing so.

It's also great if you book even one trip through JetBlue Vacations a year, because the card comes with an annual statement credit for $100 through JetBlue Vacations.

JetBlue Premier: Disappointing Benefits

The JetBlue Premier Card just came out in late January 2025, but online commenters already sound disappointed. One Redditor called it "the Plus card with lounge access for an extra $400 a year — yikes."

Another person said that the airline did a poor job with a product that does little to attract additional loyalty to JetBlue: "What a letdown for a card that had a lot of hype."

People specifically complained about the Paisly credit, which is broken up into six $50 credits on individual purchases of $250 or more.
