Updated

If you spend a lot of money on groceries, using a rewards credit card that offers bonus rewards at the supermarket makes sense to maximize this necessary expense.

Fortunately, the best credit cards offer bonus points, miles, or cash back at the grocery store — and some even don't charge an annual fee.

The best credit card for groceries should earn more than 2% back on supermarket purchases and should offer other benefits such as purchase protection and additional bonus categories.

Business Insider's personal finance team reviewed dozens of the best grocery credit cards to bring you this list of winning recommendations. We evaluated annual fees, earning rates, and additional benefits to help you find the best credit card for groceries.

Prime Visa: Best Grocery Credit Card for Whole Foods and Amazon Prime Shoppers

The Amazon Prime Visa is designed for households with Amazon Prime membership or who shop at Whole Foods. This no-annual-fee credit card earns 5% on Amazon purchases including Amazon Fresh, and at Whole Foods including grocery delivery and pickup orders.

Cardholders also earn 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, and local transit and commuting (including rideshare), and 1% back on all other purchases.

If you shop at other supermarkets, however, you'll likely earn better rewards with a different card that earns bonuses across all grocery stores. And if you don't have an Amazon Prime membership, the card only earns 3% back instead of 5% at Whole Foods, Amazon, and Chase Travel.

American Express® Gold Card: Best Grocery Credit Card for Big Spenders and Foodies

The American Express® Gold Card is a great choice for big spenders who spend five figures on premium groceries and restaurants each year.

This premium credit card earns 4 points on up to $25,000 in combined annual purchases (then 1 point) at U.S. supermarkets, and at restaurants on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1 point. Terms apply.

Amex Gold Cardholders break even on the $325 annual fee (rates and fees) each year after spending approximately $4,500 across groceries and restaurants, since Business Insider values Amex points at an average value of 1.8 cents apiece. If you consistently spend more than $400 a month on dining out and cooking at home, this card makes a lot of sense for you. Terms apply.

Cardholders can also enroll to receive several hundred dollars' worth of annual credits toward food purchases. If you can use these perks, they go a long way toward further justifying the Amex Gold Card's high annual fee (rates and fees).

Notable benefits include up to $100 Resy credit (in semi-annual installments of up to $50 apiece), plus $120 in Uber Cash (in monthly increments of up to $10), which can be used toward Uber Eats as well as rideshares. These benefits are not active until you enroll, and terms apply.

Stores that Earn Bonus Rewards on Credit Cards for Groceries

Each bank has a slightly different definition of what counts as a grocery store purchase when it comes to earning bonus rewards. Most credit card networks do not code purchases from superstores like Walmart or Target, or warehouse clubs like Costco, as groceries, so you typically won't earn extra points or cash back on those purchases.

There are other restrictions to keep in mind. For example, American Express only awards bonus points or cash back at "U.S. supermarkets" and not retailers abroad. It defines supermarkets as retailers that offer a wide variety of food and household products such as meat, fresh produce, dairy, canned and packaged goods, household cleaners, pharmacy products, and pet supplies. This does not include superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, or meal-kit delivery services.

Meanwhile, Chase's definition includes supermarkets, merchants that offer a full-service grocery line of merchandise including a deli and bakery, and smaller grocery stores. Larger stores that sell a wide variety of goods and groceries, like warehouse clubs, discount stores, drugstores, and merchants that specialize in only a few grocery items aren't included, but delivery service merchants (like Instacart) are included if they classify as a grocery store merchant.

Grocery Store Credit Cards

From time to time, you'll come across a supermarket chain that issues its own credit card for groceries.

For instance, Texas-based grocery store H-E-B offers its own credit card that earns 5% cash back on all H-E-B-brand products and 1.5% cash back on everything else. And of course, the Target Circle™️ Card earns 5% back on eligible Target purchases, while the Prime Visa earns 5% back on eligible Amazon and Whole Foods purchases if you have an Amazon Prime membership.

It may be worth your while to get a grocery store-issued credit card if you shop almost exclusively at that chain, and if the rewards are worth the hassle of juggling an extra card in your wallet. In most situations, you'll do best by choosing one of the best credit cards for groceries that earns bonus rewards regardless of the chain.

Additional Bonus Categories on the Best Credit Cards for Groceries

There isn't a one-size-fits-all for supermarket shopping, even across the best grocery credit cards.

Some cards like the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earn "good enough" bonuses on most expenses that some shoppers don't mind leaving a little extra earning opportunity on the table in exchange for simplicity. Other cards like the Citi Custom Cash℠ Card are best for people willing to do extra work, like tracking bonus categories and earning limits, for maximum rewards.

Rotating Category Credit Cards for Groceries

In fact, some of the best credit cards for groceries aren't featured in this guide because they take a lot of extra work.

The Discover it® Cash Back and the Chase Freedom Flex® both earn 5% bonuses on categories that rotate each quarter, which almost always includes groceries at least once a year.

But both cards require a lot of management: Cardholders must remember each quarter's bonus categories and exclusions, and avoid spending beyond the quarterly cap of $1,500 for bonuses unless they're willing to waste earning potential.

We didn't include these cards in this guide despite their generous rates of return because most people won't want to go to the hassle for a few extra percentage points of cash back. If you're interested, read more in our Chase Freedom card quarterly bonus categories calendar and our Discover cash back calendar.
