Pumpkin Pet Insurance Overview

Pumpkin is one of the leaders in the pet insurance industry despite its relatively recent founding in 2019. It falls under an umbrella of pet insurance companies owned by JAB Holdings, a giant in pet insurance. The company also owns ASPCA, AKC, Figo, and Pet Partners.

Pumpkin provides a wide array of benefits, an option for unlimited coverage, and a wellness package add-on. It has generous terms when it comes to preexisting conditions, covering curable preexisting conditions after a symptom-free 180-day waiting period. Pumpkin also doesn't have upper age limits, so you can enroll your pet regardless of their age, though you'll pay a high price for coverage.

Pumpkin particularly stands out for offering coverages that many pet insurance companies exclude like prescription food and end-of-life services.

While we're talking about price, it's worth noting that Pumpkin's cost isn't outstandingly expensive, but it's not necessarily the cheapest pet insurance. Additionally, Pumpkin raises premiums on a yearly basis according to your pet's age. That said, you can get a 10% discount if you enroll multiple pets.

Additionally, its wellness plan doesn't offer much for cats or dogs. Dogs get one annual wellness exam, two disease prevention vaccines, one blood test for heartworm and tick diseases, and one fecal test. Cats get a single wellness exam, a single disease prevention vaccine, and a single fecal test. It's not nearly as comprehensive as the wellness plans from some of its competitors.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage

Pumpkin pet insurance offers an extensive list of covered conditions for pet owners. It offers the standard coverages like accidents, injuries, illnesses, and chronic conditions. However, it also provides coverage for dental illnesses, behavioral issues, and hereditary/congenital conditions. Pet owners can also get reimbursed for treatments like prescription medication and surgery. It also provides coverage for end-of-life services and prescription foods for covered conditions, which isn't common among pet insurance providers.

Pumpkin's insurance options are as follows:

  • Reimbursement percentage: 80% or 90%
  • Deductibles: $100, $250, $500, $1,000
  • Coverage limit (dogs): $5K, $10K, $20K, Unlimited
  • Coverage limit (cats): $5K, $7K, $15K, Unlimited

Buyers can upgrade any Pumpkin policy to include coverage for preventive essentials such as wellness visits to their preferred veterinarian. However, neither the wellness nor insurance plans cover spaying and neutering.

Pumpkin policies are available to pets older than eight weeks old with no upper age limit. As with any pet insurance provider, Pumpkin does not insure your pet's preexisting conditions. However, if your pet has a curable preexisting condition, it is eligible for coverage after it's been cured and is symptom-free for 180 days.

Additional Coverage Options

Pet parents can add Pumpkin pet insurance's preventive essentials package to its insurance policies. This isn't technically a pet insurance plan, but an optional benefit added onto your insurance plan.

It offers the following coverage for dogs:

  • 1 annual wellness exam
  • 2 vaccines for disease prevention
  • 1 fecal test for intestinal worms
  • 1 blood test for heartworm & tick diseases

Its offerings for cats are slightly different:

  • 1 annual wellness exam
  • 1 vaccines for disease prevention
  • 1 fecal test for intestinal worms

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Cost

To get a better idea of how much Pumpkin costs, we'll look at how much a pet owner living in New York City would pay in pet insurance premiums. We chose New York City for our quotes because it is one of the most expensive places to receive vet care, which insurance premiums will reflect. Your premiums will likely be lower than the prices below.

We acquired the following quotes for a custom Pumpkin plan with a 80% reimbursement, a $10,000 annual limit, and $500 annual deductible.

Breed2-year-old (monthly)6-year-old (monthly)
French Bulldog $113.07$161.53
Labrador Retriever$88.73$126.76
Golden Retriever$88.73$126.76
German Shepherd$74.13$105.90
Standard Poodle$88.73$126.76
Mixed Medium (26-50 lbs)$65.30$93.28

In our quotes, Pumpkin's optional Preventive Essentials plan was $22.95. Prices did not change regardless of the dog's information.

Let's go over premiums for a New York City cat with a 80% reimbursement, $7,000 coverage limit, and $500 deductible.

Breed2-year-old (monthly)6-year-old (monthly)
Ragdoll$29.26$39.01
Maine Coon$37.10$49.47
Devon Rex$29.26$39.01
Exotic Shorthair$27.07$36.09
Persian$40.75$54.34
Mixed Breed$29.26$39.01

In our quotes, Pumpkin's Preventive Essentials add-on was $14.95 monthly. Prices did not change regardless of the cat's information.

Pet owners can get a 10% discount when they enroll multiple pets with Pumpkin.

It's also worth noting that pet insurance companies will adjust your premiums annually, accounting for inflation and local pet care costs. Pumpkin reserves the right to also factor your pet's age into its annual adjustments. While this isn't an uncommon practice, not all companies adjust rates using your pet's age.

How to Purchase and Manage a Pumpkin Pet Insurance Policy

You can purchase a Pumpkin pet insurance plan on its website. You'll need to provide the following information about yourself and your pet:

  • Pet's name
  • Breed
  • Age
  • Gender
  • If you have a primary vet
  • Your ZIP Code

You'll also be asked questions about what you're looking to get out of your pet insurance policy. Your answers won't affect the amount you're quoted.

Once you obtain your quotes, you can adjust your coverage to your needs. You'll also have the option to buy Pumpkin's wellness package.

Pumpkin has a 14-day waiting period for accidents, illnesses, and ligament and knee conditions.

Pumpkin also has a 30-day free-look period, in which you can cancel your policy and receive a full refund, as long as you haven't filed a claim yet. Past this period, you can cancel and receive a prorated refund.

How to File a Claim With Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin pet insurance only accepts claim submissions online or via email at claims@pumpkin.care. The company does not provide a mailing address, phone app, or fax number for claims. However, reviews indicate Pumpkin customer service agents are friendly and ready to help with anything you need.

Pumpkin policyholders can then manage claims online via its online portal. You'll need to enter your claim details in the designated fields, then upload a digital copy or photo of your itemized vet receipt and any relevant medical records. Claims must be filed within 270 days from the date of service.

Once submitted, you can track your claim processing status within the member portal. Customers report that submission is easy, and Pumpkin consistently pays out eligible reimbursements promptly.

Pumpkin Customer Service and Claims Experience

Pumpkin is very positively reviewed by customers, receiving 4.7 stars out of five on Trustpilot. Customers spoke highly of the claims process, particularly the speed of reimbursement. However, some customers had issues with health issues being classified as preexisting and large increases to their premiums.

Pumpkin will respond to negative reviews on Trustpilot very consistently. However, response times vary. Some reviews get same-day responses while others get responses after two or three weeks.

Let's review some third-party ratings of Pumpkin's services.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners' complaint index rates insurance companies based on how many complaints they receive against its share of the market. A 1.00 means that a company has an expected number of complaints based on its size. A lower score indicates fewer complaints than expected and a higher number indicates more complaints than expected.

Pumpkin plans are underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, which scored 0.72, indicating that it has fewer complaints than expected.

Some Pumpkin policies are also underwritten by Independence American Insurance Company, which has a 315.06 Company Complaint Index score, indicating it has an extremely high volume of complaints than expected given its size. A number this high deserves some context. The company has five complaints, just over 0.01% of all complaints, compared against its $555,795 annual revenue in 2024, which makes up 0.000033% of the U.S. market.

Independence American Insurance Company has an A- (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating from AM Best, indicating that it is able to fulfill its financial obligations.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance Alternatives

See how Pumpkin compares to two other options for pet insurance coverage: Healthy Paws and Lemonade.

Pumpkin vs. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is similar to Pumpkin, offering one comprehensive plan. Healthy Paws' plan has unlimited coverage, making it a strong contender for severe accidents or illnesses. Healthy Paws offers a choice between 70% or 80% reimbursement rates and an annual deductible of $250 or $500. Ultimately, Pumpkin has more flexibility than Healthy Paws, with the option to choose unlimited coverage or lower coverage limits for owners on a budget.

Pumpkin also outshines Healthy Paws in benefits, offering features that Healthy Paws lacks, like exam fee coverage, prescription food coverage, and an optional wellness package. Additionally, Pumpkin's terms on preexisting conditions are more forgiving than Healthy Paws.

While Healthy Paws offers less, it is the cheaper product. While Pumpkin offers more coverage, you may find the price difference isn't worth the extra cost. However, that ultimately comes down to your priorities and your budget for pet care.

Pumpkin vs. Lemonade Pet Insurance

Lemonade Pet Insurance and Pumpkin have a lot of similarities when it comes to policy options. Both companies offer annual deductible options as low as $100 per year, and few pet owners will require more than Lemonade's top-tier yearly payout limit of $100,000. For pet parents who want extra peace of mind, Pumpkin offers unlimited coverage.

Lemonade stands out for its flexibility. Many of its coverages are add-ons, such as dental illness and behavioral condition coverage. This can be annoying if you just want full coverage, but this feature offers a chance to save money if a pet owner doesn't need those conditions covered.

Ultimately, if you want cheaper, customizable coverage, Lemonade is the better option. However, if you're looking for a total coverage plan, Pumpkin is the better option.

Pumpkin vs. ASPCA Pet Insurance

Pumpkin and ASPCA are fairly similar. Both companies offer pet insurance with no age limits, 14-day waiting periods for orthopedic and ligament issues, and coverage for curable preexisting conditions after 180 days. Additionally, their prices are roughly equivalent.

However, Pumpkin has a few advantages over ASPCA, primarily its more wider array of benefits — like prescription food and end-of-life benefits — and unlimited coverage option. Meanwhile, ASPCA coverage maxes out at $10,000.

Given a choice between Pumpkin and ASPCA, the clear choice is Pumpkin.

Low premiums and sometimes high payouts mean most pet insurance companies are based on a love for pets. As such, it's rare to find a pet insurance company that isn't providing a good service. So we get into the details to separate competitors and see who comes out on top.
