The parade has taken place annually for more than 260 years and involves a military procession of more than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians.

This year marks Charles' first parade since becoming king, and he marked the occasion by riding on horseback — the first time that a reigning monarch has ridden at Trooping the Colour since 1986.

Once they arrived at Buckingham Palace, the royals headed up to the balcony to watch around 70 different types of aircraft take part in the celebratory flypast.

They also took time to wave to onlookers gathered in front of the palace who were waving Union Jacks and vying for glimpses of the royals.

At one point, Louis seemed to take the balcony appearance very seriously and gave a salute, much to the apparent amusement of his parents.

But in what's become somewhat of a tradition for the 5-year-old, Louis was also photographed pulling a few show-stealing funny faces.

After the flypast, the royals departed the balcony, with Charles and his granddaughter Charlotte giving the crowds one last wave.
