Subby’s right (as usual)… the carriers are actually REQUIRED to place your mail in the mailbox. That avoids the errors that could be made by some genius who might independently decide to leave your mail stuck under your windshield wipers or beneath your welcome mat!
The "extra" work for them is delivering anything that’s too big for the mailbox (insert "large package" joke here). They can’t be sure that someone is going to be home and answer the door when they bring the package. While they have no choice but to leave the package near the door because it doesn’t fit in the mailbox, they won’t leave the regular mail there because it might blow away, get wet, be chewed by an animal, etc. It gets drummed into their heads that mail goes in the mailbox unless it doesn’t fit. Even if they have reason to think you might be there and answer the door for the package, it’s second nature to them to put the other mail in the box first.

 

The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the need of the expanding bureaucracy!

It’s probably safe to say that most of us made some questionable decisions when we were younger, but this level of needless destruction is over the top. I hope he receives some type of meaningful sentence, but I’m afraid they’ll go easy on him because of his age.
If he was my kid, I’d be sure to find some punishment that would cause some long-lasting hardship in HIS world. His prized possessions would all be given away or needlessly destroyed (as the tree was) with no hope of replacement, and I’d make sure he spent some time in the desert, learning a new-found appreciation for trees!

 

I saw a report on that. What kid grabs a chainsaw and cuts down a huge tree overnight?

That takes planning. Strategy. Figuring out resources, creating opportunity. This wasn’t a capricious act.

The sheer commitment to destruction this kid showed is both impressive and disturbing.

 

Who the hell destroys their kids possessions as punishment? Sure as dammit that’s not gonna create socio positive behaviours as they mature.

 

It doesn’t seem that kid is on (or even near!) a path that includes socio-positive behaviors, nor does he have any concept of the value of irreplaceable, significant items that don’t belong to him and are extremely meaningful to others. I’m not talking about taking away his bed, clothes, shoes, food, books, etc., but he would definitely lose the gaming systems, laptop, tablet, cell phone. He didn’t pay for them, showed he doesn’t deserve them, and needs to understand what it feels like to be treated in kind.

 

You said needlessly destroying them tho, that’s a huge difference. Adults actions have a massive influence and impact on behaviour later in life.

Regardless of their actions destroying tree or whatever else, punishment needs to be applied, but not in a destructive way. Learned behaviour is begotten by educating and giving life lessons on the worth of people, possessions and the natural world around us. Violence towards them in either physical or destructive ways just shows what’s acceptable as an adult when they in your shoes. ​

They had a chain of coffee kiosks in Seattle with girls in lingerie a while back. My son-in-law took me there a couple of times when we were up there on a visit. They all were quite jovial and chatty. Contrasting that with the Apple Genius Bar, I think I liked the coffee girls a lot more.
